Board of Directors

Andrea Miller

Andrea Miller is the Founding Board Member of the Center for Common Ground, Executive Director of People Demanding Action, Founding President of the National Women’s Political Caucus of Virginia. Andrea is an IT and Political Director and a digital and elections strategist. She designs and administers digital phone banks and texting programs. From 2013 to 2015, she led the Progressive Round Table on Capitol Hill, bringing together members of Congress, activists, and non-profit leaders. Her expertise is in voting rights, climate, and the Equal Rights Amendment. She has successfully advocated for legislation on both the Federal and State level. In 2008 she was the Democratic nominee for the Virginia 4th Congressional district.

Dr. Gabriela Lemus

Dr. Lemus is the President of Mi Familia Vota Education Fund and CEO of Revolution Strategies US. In September 2013, Dr. Lemus became President and Executive Director of both Progressive Congress and the Progressive Congress Action Fund. She served as Senior Adviser to Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis and Director of the Office of Public Engagement from 2009-2013. She was the first woman Executive Director at the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement (LCLAA) from 2007-2009, and the first woman and Labor leader to chair the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda (NHLA) from 2008-2009. At LCLAA, she co-founded the National Latino Coalition on Climate Change (NLCCC) in 2006, which later evolved into GreenLatinos, and was a founding Commissioner for the Commission to Engage African-Americans on Climate Change (CEAAC).

Rev. Rodney Sadler

An ordained Baptist minister, he is co-founder of Faith in Solar and Alliance of Moral Progressives. He is the former Assistant Project Director with the Leadership Development Programs of the Congress of National Black Churches, and the former Director of the Office of Black Church Studies at Duke University Divinity School. He is currently an Associate Professor of the Bible at Union Presbyterian Seminary (Charlotte Campus). Dr. Sadler is the Director of the seminary's Center for Social Justice and Reconciliation. Rodney Sadler's teaching experience includes courses in biblical languages, Old and New Testament interpretation, wisdom literature in the Bible, the history and religion of ancient Israel, and African American biblical interpretation. His first authored book, Can A Cushite Change His Skin? An Examination of Race, Ethnicity, and Othering in the Hebrew Bible, was published in 2005.

Deepak Puri

Deepak is the co-founder of Democracy Labs, a non-profit that connects progressive groups with free and affordable solutions to run better campaigns. DemLabs works closely with grassroots groups to identify their needs, finds the best solution to meet them, and then widely shares how to use those new tools. Deepak is an engineer and Silicon Valley veteran with three software patents with fifteen years of experience at Netscape, Oracle, and VMware. Deepak leads the IT team at the Center for Common Ground.

Kati Hornung

Kati is the co-founder and Director of VoteEqualityUS, a nationwide, nonpartisan, grassroots effort to ensure the 28th Amendment (Equal Rights) is added to the Constitution. Prior to running VoteEqualityUS, she ran VAratifyERA, Virginia’s campaign that achieved Virginia’s ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment in January 2020. Her efforts are driven by her own life’s experiences, the interest of her two children in correcting the purposeful, historical exclusion of women from our Constitution, and the hope that incarcerated women will one day have a new tool in their legal toolbox to challenge gender discrimination by the government. Kati is committed to advancing all forms of equality and believes voter suppression is the major factor in elected officials advancing discriminatory policies and laws.

Edwuan Whitehead

Public Policy Director

Edwuan Whitehead serves as Public Policy Director for the Center for Common Ground, where he leads state and local policy strategy focused on protecting voting rights, expanding equitable civic participation, and strengthening democratic accountability. His work ensures that large-scale, nonpartisan voter engagement efforts translate into durable policy outcomes that safeguard access to the ballot—particularly for Black, working-class, and historically disenfranchised communities. 

Prior to joining the Center for Common Ground, Edwuan served as Legal Advocate and Assistant Director for CourtWatch PG. He is also the CEO of ALO Community Strategies, advising nonprofit organizations and civic campaigns on policy development, compliance, and community-centered engagement. Edwuan has supported campaigns at every level of government and currently serves as Vice President of the Injustice Reform Network – Virginia.

He holds a certificate in Political Campaign Management from the University of Richmond and is pursuing a degree in Human Services at Indiana Wesleyan University. His work is grounded in a clear belief: voting rights are not symbolic—they are essential tools for representation, accountability, and lasting change.

Josi Riederer von Paar

Communications Manager

As Communications Manager oversees all internal and external communications for the organization to keep the public and volunteers informed and engaged in our efforts to mobilize Black voters and defend the freedom to vote.

Before joining the Center for Common Ground, Josi received a B.A. in Global Liberal Studies from New York University. She also holds an M.S. in Strategic Communications from Columbia University.

Jon Williams

Democracy Center Co-Manager

Joining Andrea Miller, Jon now works as co-Manager of the Center for Common Ground Democracy Centers focusing on enhancing community engagement and civic participation. Jon started as the Democracy Center IT Lead, working directly with Democracy Centers to support them in their daily operations. He also provides and analyzes voter statistics, builds and maintains Democracy Center websites.

Janice Gay

Phone Bank Team Manager

Janice Gay serves as the Phone Bank Team Manager with Center for Common Ground. She became involved with the organization as a volunteer when she organized an event in the City of Norfolk. Since 2021, Janice has been the lead  organizer for both the Norfolk & Virginia Beach Democracy
Centers. Today, she manages a group of young men and women who serve as our Phone Bank Team based in Virginia. One of her personal and professional goals has been to inspire and impact the lives of our young people.

Gabriel Wheaton

General IT Manager

Gabriel assists with constructing, editing and facilitating phone banks to ensure that Center For Common Ground can provide the most effective tools for our volunteers to reach voters in target areas. He also provides IT support with website and other digital content.
